PHILANTHROPY

The Arthritis Society

Strike Out Arthritis | September 2014

KidSafe

Beta Kappa Chapter of AOII also helps support KidSafe, which provides free after-school and summer programs to at-risk children in Vancouver’s poorest neighbourhood.

Launched in 1993 by inner-city school principals, Vancouver residents, and the Vancouver Sun in response to rising after-school violence. They aimed to provide a safe place for children to go when school was out. KidSafe offers nutritious meals, emotional support, and activities aimed at helping the children build self-esteem and confidence. They also provide programming around literacy, health and wellness, arts and culture, science, and leadership.

AOII believes in encouraging its women to live healthy lifestyles, supporting each other through tough life circumstances, and providing activities to encourage each others’ self-esteem and confidence. We’re proud to support an organization that is helping inspire those same attributes for children in our community!

AOII PHILANTHROPY EVENTS

Score Out Arthritis

AOII Goes Blue

Each fall our sisters put on a soccer tournament to raise money for The Arthritis Society. Sororities and fraternities enter teams to compete in a fun round-robin tournament. Putting on the event is a team effort as well! Each team is guided and coached by 2-3 AOII sisters, while other sisters help organize the event, run the registration, sell bake sale concession items, or referee the games. This year our sisters and the participants braved the rain to raise over $1500! Special congratulations go out to the winning teams of 2014, Alpha Delta Pi and Delta Kappa Epsilon.

Our MC's this year, Gabby and Corey!

Pictures With Santa

In late November we turn our chapter room into a winter wonderland and invite men and women across campus to come have their photo taken with our handsome Santa! All proceeds from the photos go towards KidSafe after school programs, and everyone loves coming away with the boost of holiday cheer before exams. We’d love to see you there next year!

Alpha Omicron Pi was founded on a promise to serve one another and the greater community. In the fraternity's early years, members would vote and choose a philanthropy focus, targeting issues that were important to women and their communities. In 1967, AOII chose arthritis as their official philanthropy because of the impact the disease has on women and children. One in six Canadians are affected by this joint disease, of which two-thirds are women. We truly hope that our contribution to the Arthritis Society will result in new and more effective treatments and medications.

We encourage everyone to visit the Arthritis Society website, read the stories of those with adult arthritis and juvenile arthritis, and come out to our events to help fundraise in the hopes of finding a cure!

Our spring live performance philanthropy event gives everyone a chance to shine! Participants from across campus are invited to perform whatever their talent is at our venue. Each performer has a jar for donations, and attendees “vote” for their favourite performance by donating money in that performer’s jar. At the end of the event, the performer with the most donations wins awesome prizes, and the proceeds are donated to

The Arthritis Society. This year's live performance night yielded some amazing talent, and we’re excited to see next year’s performances!

Interested in performing? Email philanthropy@aoiiubc.com for details! We'd love to have you perform.
